Here is a fact that reframes what happens in Bangkok on 14 November: of every international Eurovision spin-off announced since 2018, Eurovision Asia is the only one that has reached broadcast — and even it needed two false starts to get there.
The company behind it has announced a lot of contests. Most of them never happened.
Who Voxovation is
Voxovation has held the rights to the Eurovision Song Contest format outside Europe since 2018. It is led by CEO Peter Settman and President/COO Greg Lipstone, with Christer Björkman — a former Eurovision performer and one of the contest’s longest-serving producers — as Head of Music and founder.
The wider producing team includes Anders Lenhoff, Ola Melzig and Greg Lipstone. Marcus Tang was hired as Managing Director Asia in November 2025, and Assaf Blecher is executive producer of the Bangkok edition.
These are not amateurs. Settman’s background includes Melodifestivalen; Melzig is a veteran Eurovision technical producer.
The announcements that didn’t land
American Song Contest (2022)
The only other spin-off to actually air. Voxovation partnered with NBC, and the show ran for a single season — memorably fronted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg — before NBC dropped it after poor ratings.
Eurovision Song Contest Canada
Announced, produced by the same team, with Insight Productions working to find a broadcast partner. No broadcaster was ever formally announced. It has not been held.
Eurovision Song Contest Latin America
Announced in July 2022 by the EBU with considerable fanfare, citing strong Latin American YouTube viewership for the European contest. A host city search was to begin within months. Chile was reported as likely. It has not been held.
Eurovision India
Proposed by Voxovation in March 2023. Never launched.
Eurovision Arab World
The newest proposal, added to Voxovation’s site in November 2025, envisaging 22 countries from Mauritania to Oman. Reported by Eurovoix at the time.
Eurovoix noted in April 2026 that the Canada and India formats, while still accessible on Voxovation’s website, were no longer actively listed among its promoted potential formats.
Why this context matters for Bangkok
Three things follow.
First, delivery is the achievement. Getting eleven broadcasters across eleven markets to actually produce national selections and turn up is the hard part, and it is the part every previous attempt failed at.
Second, the stakes for edition two are real. American Song Contest proves that airing once is not the same as surviving. The 2027 host will be chosen by a bidding process after Bangkok rather than awarded to the winner — which only works if there are bidders.
Third, it explains the caution around expansion. The ambition of twelve to fourteen countries, and the careful handling of additions like Mongolia, reads differently once you know the track record. This is a producer that has learned what over-announcing costs.
The longer pattern
Eurovision Asia itself is the third attempt at this specific contest. A 2008–2011 project collapsed, and an Australian-led 2016–2021 effort was shelved. We have traced that whole history in our Eurovision Asia prehistory.
Seen against that record, an eleven-country field in Bangkok with entries already selected is not a modest turnout. It is the furthest anyone has ever got.
