The story

One host, no draw, and votes for sale

Sweden took the contest back to Malmö and stripped it down. There was one presenter, Petra Mede, where recent contests had used three. It was the first time anyone had hosted alone since 1995.

The show opened with something old made new: a parade of the finalists, each behind a national flag, walking over a bridge above the audience. It has opened every final since.

Thirty-nine

The field was smaller. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Portugal could not afford to come. Slovakia and Turkey dropped out for other reasons, and neither has been back.

Armenia returned after missing Baku.

For the first time since 1985, not one country of the former Yugoslavia reached the final.

No more draw

Until 2013 the order in which songs were performed was drawn by lot. Now the producers decided it.

Their argument was that it made for a better show: similar songs could be kept apart, and every entry given a chance to stand out. Finalists still drew to learn whether they would sing in the first half or the second. The rest was a production decision.

Fans and broadcasters were divided about it.

Counting differently

The way jury and public votes were combined also changed. Each juror now had to rank every song from first to last, and the whole of each country’s televote was counted, not just its top ten.

And for the first time the winner was declared as soon as nobody could catch up. That happened with four countries still to vote.

Votes for sale

Before the final, a Lithuanian news site published an undercover video. It appeared to show people working on behalf of Azerbaijan offering money for votes: recruiting groups of ten and handing out SIM cards so that each person could vote many times over. The same thing was said to be going on in fifteen countries.

The EBU later confirmed that there had been an attempt to cheat. It said the attempt had failed, because its systems prevent that kind of fraud, and that there was no evidence any broadcaster was involved. The rules were tightened all the same: from 2014 a broadcaster could be suspended for three years over fraud carried out in its favour.

In 2015 a member of the contest’s own steering group went further, and said that Azerbaijan had cheated, in an organised and very expensive way.

The points Russia did not get

There was a second row involving Azerbaijan. Officially it gave Russia no points, although Russia’s singer had reportedly come second in the Azerbaijani phone vote.

Azerbaijan’s president ordered an inquiry. Russia’s foreign minister said the result had been falsified and promised a response.

A kiss

Finland’s Krista Siegfrids ended her song, “Marry Me”, by kissing one of her female backing singers. She said it was a message to her own country, which had not legalised same-sex marriage. The Turkish and Greek media took it badly.

The result

Denmark’s Emmelie de Forest won with “Only Teardrops”, on 281 points, 47 ahead of Azerbaijan. Ukraine was third.

The hosts were fourteenth. Ireland finished last.

A Dutch producer pointed out that the winning song’s opening flute solo resembled a Dutch pop song of 2002. He added that it was the only similarity, and called the fuss a storm in a teacup.
