five wins!

Netherlands at Eurovision

The Netherlands first sang at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956, at the very first one, and has entered 65 contests, the last of them in 2025. It has won five times: in 1957, 1959, 1969, 1975 and 2019. The contest has been held there five times, most recently in Rotterdam in 2021.

In our contest stories

Lines about the Netherlands from our story of each contest. Follow a link for the rest of that night.

  • 1957 Ten countries

Corry Brokken, who had sung one of the two Dutch songs in 1956, was back for the Netherlands.

  • 1957 The result

    The Netherlands won easily.

  • 1958 How Hilversum got it

Winning in 1957 did not give the Netherlands the right to host.

  • 1958 Who was there

Lys Assia sang for Switzerland for the third contest in a row, and Corry Brokken, the reigning champion, did the same for the Netherlands.

  • 1959 Cannes

The Netherlands had hosted in 1958 only because nobody else wanted to.

  • 1959 The result

    The Netherlands won again.

  • 1969 Eighteen, four times

The most any song took from one jury was six, and it went to the Netherlands.

  • 1969 Eighteen, four times

Spain — Salomé, "Vivo cantando"; United Kingdom — Lulu, "Boom Bang-a-Bang"; Netherlands — Lenny Kuhr, "De troubadour", which she co-wrote; France — Frida Boccara, "Un jour, un enfant"

  • 1970

Britain and Spain ruled themselves out: they had staged the last two contests and did not want a third. That left France and the Netherlands.

  • 1975 The result

Teach-In's "Ding-a-dong" won for the Netherlands with 152 points — the first time the song that opened the show had won it. It was the Netherlands' fourth victory, level with France and Luxembourg.

  • 1976

Corry Brokken won the contest for the Netherlands in 1957.

  • 1980 Nobody volunteers

In the Netherlands one broadcaster, TROS, was keen, but the national organisation would not back it and hoped somebody else would step forward.

  • 1980 Johnny Logan

It was Ireland's second win. Both had come in the Netherlands.

  • 2019 The result

The Netherlands won, for the first time in 44 years.

  • 2021 Things that broke

In the Netherlands some viewers' votes in the final were never counted, because of a fault at a phone company.

  • 2021 The result

At the bottom, four countries received no points at all from the public: Germany, Spain, the host Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Results as published by the European Broadcasting Union. “Not in the line-up” means no song from the Netherlands was in that year’s contest, whatever the reason. Spotted a mistake? Tell us and we’ll fix it.
