In our contest stories
Lines about Greece from our story of each contest. Follow a link for the rest of that night.
- 1973 Seventeen, not eighteen
Greece asked to join in October 1972. It was past the deadline, and Greece waited a year.
- 1974 The missing eighteenth
Greece entered for the first time.
- 1975 Nineteen
Greece, which had only just joined, stayed out.
- 1975 Nineteen
Turkey had invaded Cyprus the previous summer, and Greece is reported to have pulled out late — possibly rather than share a stage with it.
- 1976 Who stayed away
Austria and Greece returned, making eighteen.
- 1976 The Greek song
Greece had stayed away in 1975 because of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
- 1977 The result
Greece came fifth, its best result so far.
- 1982 Greece pulls its song
Greece had a song, a singer and a place in the running order, second.
- 1982 Returning acts
Anna Vissi, who had sung for Greece in 1980, now sang for Cyprus and came fifth.
- 1983 Who came
France, Greece and Italy all returned, making twenty.
- 1984 Who was missing
Greece had meant to come.
- 1985 Two absences on the same day
Greece and Israel returned, so the total stayed at nineteen.
- 1986 Twenty-two become twenty
Italy decided against it. And Greece, which had already chosen its singer and song, withdrew late: the contest fell on Holy Saturday in the Orthodox calendar.
- 1987 Twenty-two
Greece and Italy returned, and for the first time 22 countries competed.
- 2005 The result
Greece had been entering since 1974 and had never won.
- 2006 Athens, not Thessaloniki
Greece's first contest was held in the Olympic Indoor Hall, where the gymnastics and basketball finals of the 2004 Olympics had been staged.
